Falling down stairs, sprained or strained ankles and knees!

I've been hearing a lot of people who are falling down stairs and/or spraining or straining their ankles and knees.

BE CAREFUL PEOPLE!!!

We are all busy running around, taking on more than we can handle and trying to do everything by ourselves as quickly and efficiently as possible. But are we really efficient if we aren't paying attention to our safety and creating a health hazard? *pointing at self* Guilty!

Take extra time to take care of you! Without this extra time, you will be taking it whether you want it or not. Healing time for a broken bone can range from 4-6 weeks or more depending upon the extent of the injury. Healing time for a spain or strain depending upon the severity can range from 2 - 36 weeks!

So, isn't it worth taking a few extra minutes to slow down or make an extra trip so you don't trip and fall?

If you haven't been able to avoid that break, sprain or strain you are now in a situation where movement of the area is restricted and possibly completely immobilized. This is great for healing the area but causes scar tissue build up and atrophy (degeneration of cells) of the muscles.

Oh, great! Now what? Well, massage can help in your recuperation process. Once you have been cleared by your doctor and/or physical therapist for massage, techniques such as cross fiber friction, myofascial release and stretching can do wonders to help restore function in the injured area. In restoring function and mobility to the area it also decreases your chances of re-injuring the area again and again. It can also do wonders when recovering from surgery by making the scar area more pliable and breaking down the scar tissue from the surgery itself.

If you've found yourself in this unfortunate situation and would like more information about how and when to be treated contact me at 610-842-9257.

Stay healthy and safe!
